Campers got up bright and early for their first full day of Ultimate. After a quick breakfast, everyone headed to the fields for the first session of the day. PK led off warm ups where campers stretched and sprinted to get their blood flowing. Once everyone was warmed up campers headed into throwing drills with the counselors.
Once campers finished lunch they headed back to the fields for the second session of the day. Campers scrimmaged in their temporary teams with input from the counselors. Each team got tips and tricks to help with the offence and defense. After a couple of games campers finished the session with some sprints.
Before we knew it, Team Night had begun! Campers filed into the lecture hall to meet with their teams for the week. Games were played to determine the colors each team would wear. Once the colors were settled campers headed off to bed to cap off their second day at camp.
Campers came far and wide for the first day of Session B of NUTC 2019! Moving into their rooms for the week, campers got checked in by the staff and got their complimentary NUTC gear. Once settled in, everyone headed to the fields for a few games of pickup before dinner.
After dinner, campers headed to Intro Night where camp director Tiina Booth and the counselors went over all the rules and expectations of camp.
Once Into Night had ended, campers returned to the dorms where they met with their floor for their first meeting of the week. Just like that the first day of Session B wrapped up and everyone headed to bed looking forward to an Ultimate filled week.
Today was our last day for Session A! The light blue, yellow, red, and green teams competed in the semis while the grey and dark blue teams played a consolation game. Campers didn’t let a little rain stop them from playing hard and keeping all the games tight. In the end, red and light blue faced off, and light blue came out on top.
We capped the week off with our awards ceremony and said goodbye to the campers. Thank you for coming out and playing hard. See you next year!
The tournament continued today with 4 full games! Everyone battled it out for a top spot in the semi-finals tomorrow. Campers showcased the skills they’ve learned and built upon all week to spectacular results! And their counselors cheered them on, coached them, and doled out ‘shups as needed.
We ended the night with our NUTC talent show, and saw many incredible talents! Campers also competed in the final battle in the Disc Olympics: Disc-Spinning!
Today was PINK TUESDAY! Everyone got plenty of team time today! We kicked the morning off with a lesson on choosing the right path: either allowing the uncontrollables to bring you down or checking in with your teammates to lift each other up. Then teams worked on drills before our Disc Olympics began. Campers represented their teams and competed in MTA (maximum time aloft).
After, we had one of the most exciting parts of camp – the womxn’s scrimmage! This session was historic in that it was the first session in NUTC history where we didn’t need our womxn counselors to play because we have SO MANY womxn campers!!
Campers also received their jerseys today! Everyone is looking super fresh. After lunch we held the next part of our Disc Olympics: Distance! Then teams spent some time together warming up and running drills before the first tournament game. It was a long, hot round, but the campers left it all on the fields, and we saw some tight games. We rounded out the Disc Olympics with the Disc-a-thon before rec hour.
Following dinner, all campers attended one of our two gender equity talks. There was a “101” for those new to the discussion and a “201” for all others.
Now that the campers have their teams for the week, they’re spending lots of time with them learning about each other and the sport of ultimate! Our morning session included lessons on dangerous plays and vertical stack. Then there was plenty of time for scrimmages, everyone’s favorite! In the afternoon session campers practiced distance throwing, defensive positioning, and breaking the mark. Then, even MORE scrimmaging!
We had a busy night scheduled, with trade night following dinner, then the camper vs counselor game! The campers came to play and we had a tight 2-2 game early, but the counselors soon broke away to defeat them 16-4. Everyone capped the night off with ice cream sundaes back at the dorms!
The first full day of camp kicked off today with a 6:30 AM fire drill! The campers all seemed in great spirits. We began our first session this morning with some demonstrations from the counselors on throwing and push-up form. After warm-ups, campers were separated into teams where they practiced resets on the “train tracks of love”. We got a short scrimmage in before heading to our World Cup view party! Spoiler alert below…
Our afternoon session included more scrimmaging as well as a few drills on hucking, cutting, and marking. The campers crushed it, and enjoyed a bit of downtime both before and after dinner tonight. Then it was TEAM NIGHT where campers find out their teams and compete in fun games to choose jersey color. It was ridiculous as usual.
NUTC 2019 kicked off today with the arrival of our Session A campers! Everyone went through registration where they picked up their keys and some great swag. Each camper and counselor put a pin in our map to represent their hometown, which is looking a little Massachusetts-heavy this session!
After registration, campers got to enjoy a little pickup before the rain drove us indoors. At dinner campers were asked to sit with an assigned “team”, where they could meet new campers. After dinner we had intro night, where the counselors introduced themselves and went over the rules and expectations for the week. Then, campers got back into teams for icebreakers. Everyone is looking forward to tomorrow!
Just like that, Session D of the National Ultimate Training Camp came to a finish. Teams faced off this morning in their final games of the session tournament. Many great layouts, throws, and defensive plays from all teams were made. While everyone played amazing there can only be one champion. The Purple team worked hard all the way until the end where they won in the finals against Light Blue.
To wrap up camp, campers, counselors, and parents met for the awards ceremony. Awards were given out for all types of achievements during the session. With one final thank you, campers headed back to the dorms where they packed up and headed home. This marks the end of NUTC 2018 and we could not be more proud of the campers this year. So much progression and determination was shown from athletes all over the country. Until next year!
Even with the weather giving us a hard time, NUTC campers persevered and got a lot of Ultimate activity in today. Campers met with their teams during the first session of the day. After a warm up the tournament began. Each team played a total of two games before the headed off to lunch.
Once the campers got back from lunch unfortunately the rain started to come down. We moved into the field house where numerous games were played from King of the Hill Landmine. Once the rain let up a few campers moved outside for layout practice.
