Over the past 30 years, Brown Men's Ultimate (Brownian Motion - Bmo for short) has grown into one of the premier ultimate programs in the country. With an impressive stretch of UPA College Championship appearances in the past 8 years (1999- Semifinals, 2000- National Champions, 2001- Quarterfinals, 2003- Quarterfinals, 2004- Semifinals, 2005- National Champions, 2006- Qualifiers), Bmo has established itself as a perennial contender for the national championship. The team also brings home tournament victories throughout the year, including the 2004 Ivy League Title and an impressive three-year (2003-2005) undefeated run at both its sectional and regional tournaments. In addition, Brown continues to produce some of the best players in the country, including Fortunat Mueller (DoG) and Justin Safdie (DoG, Jam), Josh Ziperstein (DoG), the 1999, 2000, 2005 Callahan winners respectively, as well as William Arnold (Sockeye, DoG) and Colin Mahoney (DoG). Brown Ultimate is more than just winning and success though; it's about being part of a program. With A, B, and C teams, Brown Ultimate currently has over 100 players of all different skill levels and commitment types. Off the Ultimate field, Bmo players are equally committed. Brown is one of the nation's top undergraduate universities. As a member of the Ivy League, Brown attracts some of the best professors in the world, and with a small graduate school, nearly all of the school's resources are devoted to the undergraduate experience. Bmo players excel in a wide variety of subjects, from English, to Sociology, Philosophy, Human Biology, Neuroscience, and Biomedical Engineering. Brown University is internationally renowned for its progressive "Open Curriculum." There are no distribution requirements and a pass/fail option available for all classes allows students to explore subjects they might feel tentative about. Highly accessible professors, tremendous resources, and an engaged and supportive student body make the Brown academic experience truly remarkable. Bmo players participate in high-level research projects, develop their own classes, intern with city officials, and even publish their own findings with professors in top academic journals. Brown's campus life offers numerous opportunities for people of all interests with over 200 student organizations. Located in Providence, Brown finds itself within a thriving New England city, known for its incredible diversity, great food and live music. Providence is located less than an hour south of Boston, and is within easy driving distance of New York City as well as the majestic outdoors of Vermont and New Hampshire. |
Funding |
The team is very well-funded by the University, receiving approximately $15,000 per year. Since the A team usually flies to 3 or 4 tournaments each Spring, our highest expenses are mostly for airfare, hotels, and car rental. A team players are asked to pay for their own flights; the team covers all other costs with funds from the University, as well as from alumni donations and merchandise sales. Airfare is usually a couple hundred dollars per tournament, and whenever possible, we use any extra funding we have to help players pay for part of their flights. B and C team members pay very little, probably $50-100 over an entire season. We are also sponsored by Patagonia, who provides the team with jerseys, warm-ups, and shorts. We also receive 70% off all other Patagonia merchandise. Gaia sponsors us as well, giving us 50% off all cleats. |
Goals |
Bmo is committed to excellence. Each year we work hard to be the best Ultimate program in the country. We strive to support an A team that can compete for a national championship, a B team that can legitimately compete in any college tournament, and the continuous improvement of all players, regardless of their skill level. And at every level of the program, our goal is to always have fun, whether it means living off campus together, throwing end of the season parties, or driving down south and spending spring break on the beach with everyone. As for the A team, our goal is to be the very best we can be. Our love for the game and commitment to our teammates pushes us to work and train for perfection. We take pride in working hard in practice, on the track, and in the weight room. Many Bmo players attest that the inter-squad scrimmages are some of the most competitive and enjoyable parts of the season. Bmo takes pride in bringing the same energy, focus, and respect for the game each time we lace up our cleats. We lay it on the line in practice, in winter tournaments, and at nationals because playing with passion is the only way to play the game. |
