GUTS College Brochure

Welcome to the newest project from the Global Ultimate Training School! We are collating information from ultimate programs/teams in order to let high school players know what their options are for playing in college. We started with a hard copy booklet in 2003 and have now putting together a digital brochure that will benefit everyone.

The GUTS College Brochure is a resource for any high school player that is interested in playing ultimate in college. Our brochure includes information from various college programs around the country. Players will have access to each program’s contact information, their values and goals during the season, commitment level and level of support from the school. High school players and families can use the brochure to explore and compare different college ultimate programs all in one spot.

Zenith is Colorado College’s gender inclusive ultimate frisbee team that strives for competitive excellence on the field and is committed to creating an inclusive community that values growth, accountability, social justice, and zest. Our goal this year is to be highly competitive at DIII Nationals. Check out our team values here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/165fe_noszZ8dXnsHT51Q9itHKDcKRxuwWOAZIx5p_po/edit?usp=sharing

As of January 2024, Zenith has split into two programs. The more competitive program practices 3 times a week for 2 hours, has 2 mandatory lifts, and 1 mandatory condition session per week. The less intense team has 2 mandatory practices and optional lifts/conditioning. Due to the class schedule at Colorado College (the Block Plan) all players have time off during monthly finals/block break. During the fall, Zenith attends two tournaments. In the spring the more competitive program attends about one tournament a month while the less intense team has about one every other month.

Typically, Zenith receives funding for 80% of all team costs for 2 in-region tournaments per year from Colorado College - often with additional support when club sports has any money left in the budget. In generally, players can expect to pay around $350-450 over the course of the year to play on the more competitive team (inclusive of jerseys and USAU membership). Less competitive team players should expect to play markably less. Pay is also determined by which tournaments you attend rather than simple which team you are rostered on.

Zenith is strongly dedicated to cost not being a barrier to play!! The team fundraises throughout the year and has draws on internal mutual aid to cover costs for any player who requests it.

Zenith is a program that is dedicate to developing a well rounded supportive team first and foremost. Players on this team will be asked to push themselves as both athletes and teammates in order to grow as a player and support the goals of the team. (We also are known for fun outfits, lots of music, and frequently dancing as part of warmups).

The recent switch to a two team format is in part due to the fact Zenith does not make cuts. Since access to high school ultimate is highly variable we are dedicated to teaching anyone who wants to learn how to play. Additionally, as a program that recognizes are players are first people, then students, and then athletes the two team structure gives more players the ability to choose how much of their time they are able to fully dedicate to ultimate within a busy college life.

In 2023, Zenith made the choice to move down to DIII from DI where we had been competing for a number of years (usually at a regional level). This move was sparked by the exciting growth in the DIII women's division nation wide. After our 2023 nationals appearance the team is HYPED to fight for another shot this year!

Lastly, Zenith works closely with the men’s division program: Wasabi Ultimate. The two programs have worked intentionally to create a larger ultimate frisbee community at Colorado College and frequently support one an other from the sidelines or on our instagram stories.

Wasabi is a close-knit community open to all genders and backgrounds that strives to use ultimate frisbee as a conduit for personal growth both on and off the field. We strive to foster an inclusive and supportive community for both our teammates and everyone we interact with, and take pride in upholding integrity, respect, and equity in all spaces we occupy. We will embody the spirit of the game while competitively performing at the highest level possible. We are proud to be a part of this team, and are responsible for holding each other to the core values of Wasabi.

We have two practices a week in the fall (off season) and three in the spring. We generally attend two or three tournaments a semester. These do not include sectionals, regionals, and nationals that happen late in the spring semester. Outside of practice we expect players to take care of their bodies and stay active throughout the year. When we are out of school we expect people to make an effort to workout, throw, play pickup, etc whenever possible.

Colorado College club sports is very supportive of our team. While a majority of the teams financing comes from fundraising, CC helps the team out significantly with finances and other logistical needs.

Wasabi is a super fun community to be a part of! While we value on-field success, frisbee is only a small part of what it means to be on Wasabi. We do lots of fun social events, and you can definitely count on having friends everywhere you look.

A cornerstone of our program is the provision of substantial athletic scholarships, enabling us to make higher education more accessible and to draw top-tier talent from four countries and three national teams.

Our overarching goal is to elevate the profile of Ultimate Frisbee, ensuring that our athletes receive the recognition and appreciation they deserve for their dedication. We aim to not only reward the efforts of Ultimate players leading up to university, but also to create an environment where enjoyment and fulfillment are paramount.

Our training regimen consists of three sessions per week, alternating between sessions in the film room, weight room, and on-field practice. Our team benefits from the guidance of a dedicated strength trainer, with whom we engage in bi-weekly lifting sessions.

Beyond scheduled practices, players are expected to avail themselves to our team Athletic Trainer for injury management, consultations, ice baths, or other physical therapy needs.

All of our games are meticulously recorded and made available online for comprehensive review. Players are required to analyze their performances as they are tagged in the game footage.

Throughout the year, we participate in a total of four tournaments during the Fall season and six to seven tournaments in the Spring. The team covers all expenses associated with travel, including meals, and tournament bid fees.

We are proud to inform you that our team is fully funded and supported by the University.

Here are some of the perks we offer:

+Elite level players: We are actively recruiting athletes from around the world, representing 5 different countries. Our team consists of a mix of graduate-level athletes with 4 years of collegiate experience, transfer students, and many who have competed in YCC.

+Strength trainers: Our team works out together 2-3 times per week, depending on whether we are in or out of season.

+Laundry service: We provide laundry service for our players, ensuring that this task is taken care of.

+Athletic trainers: Some of our players receive daily attention from our athletic trainers, who provide general care such as ice baths and cupping, as well as targeted treatments for injuries.

+Dedicated coaches: Our team is supported by both full-time and part-time coaches, all of whom bring extensive experience to their roles.

+Academic support: We have an academic advisor dedicated to the team, ensuring that classes do not interfere with practice schedules. Additionally, we offer academic sessions to help our athletes stay on track academically.

+Fully promoted one-off games: We organize and promote special games, complete with announcers, live streams, inclusion in the University schedule, and full staff support.

+Gear: As an Adidas-sponsored school, our players are fully outfitted from head to toe with gear including cleats, backpacks, jerseys, underlayers, hats, and more.

+Covered athletic expenses: We cover all athletic expenses for our players, including meals during travel, hotel accommodations (with two people per room), bid fees, and more.

As a committed cohort of athletes, we benefit from an extensive network of support provided by the University. Our aspiration is to serve as a model for other institutions, inspiring them to emulate our approach and uphold a standard of unwavering support for athletes across the board. Daisy Chain welcomes players of all experience levels to join our inclusive community that celebrates growth, teamwork, and silly goofiness. For Daisy Chain, the fall semester season is focused on recruiting new players, building our skills, getting to know each other as a team, and attending scrimmages and local unsanctioned tournaments. During the spring semester, we expect a high level of commitment from our players with 2-3 two-hour practices per week and approximately 5-6 total two-day tournaments. The Pioneer Valley area of Western Massachusetts where Mount Holyoke is situated has an incredibly strong ultimate scene and Mount Holyoke Daisy Chain competes in the most competitive D-III women's region: New England. Northeastern University

Team Name: Valkyries

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Region: Northeast

Division: Div I - Women’s

Years in Existence: 23

Contact Information: northeasternvalkyries@gmail.com

Coach Information: Jason Adams, Lizzie Jones, Caitlin Go, Duschia Bodet

Team Website: https://valksultimate.sites.northeastern.edu/

School Website: https://www.northeastern.edu/

Total School Enrollment: 22,000 undergraduate

The Valkyries strive to embody everything our name implies. In Norse mythology Valkyries they are the “choosers of the fallen” and decide who lives and who dies in conflict. They are often seen as symbols of strength, bravery and fairness, all of which guide the Valks at Northeastern. We prioritize working hard on and off the field for the betterment of the team. We value being good teammates and friends — the Valkyries are truly a family that will always support its members. We have a strong alumni base because of this strong connection. The Valks come together to play frisbee, but for every member of our roster become more than just a team.

The Valkyries have both an A and B team, so there is a level of commitment for everyone! Our A team is nationally competitive and travels to 2-3 tournaments in the regular season every year (plus sectionals, regionals and ideally nationals). The A team practices 3 times a week and requires 3 workouts outside of that (cardio, lift, throwing). The team is decided through a tryout process. B team competes regionally (driving instead of flying tournaments) and is more flexible in terms of commitment. The B team competes in the New England developmental post season. The team typically practice 2 (maybe 3) times a week but is overall more flexible. B team focuses on player development and learning the sport for those new to it.

We do receive field times and funding from Northeastern, but it is sometimes limited. Players are responsible for many costs during the season (especially on A team) but the team is always willing to help out financially. There are also a lot of fundraising opportunities throughout the season to help with costs.

If you are interested in visiting a practice or two, please let us know. We would love to have you :)

Team Name: Huskies

Coach Information: Dan Hourigan - dnlhourigan29@gmail.com

The Northeastern Huskies play in the men's division and are a competitive team that strives to reach college Nationals every year. It's a team that takes itself seriously both on and off the field, and values character being a good person first. We have taken steps in recent years to make sure that all members of the program feel included socially and that we are good representatives for the school. We also know how to have a fun time, and purposefully plan fun social events that everyone can enjoy.

The Huskies require a high level of commitment if you make the A team. In both the fall and spring semesters, we practice multiple times a week. In the spring semester, we also do at least 1-2 lifts and 1-2 track workouts per week. We typically attend three regular season tournaments in addition to the postseason tournaments, all of which we typically fly to.

Our school receives regular practice times from our school, although they are not always preferable times - some are late at night or early in the morning, while some are more regular practice times. Financially, the school provides us with some money, but the program is also expected to help fund raise to support costs such as tournament fees, rental cars, and hotels. Players usually pay for their own flights, although the program does its best to provide financial support when needed.

Members of our coaching staff include Dan Hourigan (Head Coach - has won a YCC Title as the head coach of BUDA, and a Club National Championship as the head coach of Brute Squad), Angela Zhu (has won multiple club championships with Brute Squad, multiple team USA gold medals, a college national championship with Dartmouth), Tim Bobrowski (NUTC Assistant Director), and Dan Goldstein (former Pittsburgh Temper and Boston DiG player). You are always more than welcome to reach out to either one of the coaches or the captains. We often allow prospective students to attend a practice to watch and see the level of play. Come say hi!

St. Olaf College

Team Name: St. Olaf Vortex

Location: Northfield, MN

Region: North Central

Division: Div III - Women’s

Years in Existence: 30! Since 1994

Contact Information: ultimatecaptains@stolaf.edu

Coach Information: Sylive Mercil, Elise Gallup

School Website: https://wp.stolaf.edu/

Total School Enrollment: 3,046

Vortex strives to find the perfect combination of competition, fun, community, grit and love of each other and the game. We compete at the Division III level and have been extremely successful the past several years, winning the DIII title in 2018, placing 3rd in 2019 and 2022 and 7th in 2023. We are committed to making Vortex a team in which everyone feels comfortable and welcome and we make sure finances are never an obstacle to anyone participating. St. Olaf has a women’s B team as well, Tempest, and we love to socialize with the entire Ultimate program. Our coaches, Sylvie and Elise, attend practice and travel to tournaments with us. Some Vortex players come in with high school and YCC experience while many have never thrown a frisbee before but bring their skills from soccer, volleyball, track etc to the field. Vortex is more than a competitive ultimate team, we’re a support system, a community, and according to a player's grandma “a gift”!

Vortex practices as a team 3 times a week and lifts twice a week outside of practice. Vortexers are involved in many activities across campus, but our team is a priority for all of us and we give 100% at practices and tournaments. We typically aim to attend two tournaments in the fall/winter, three tournaments during the spring season, with confro-regionals acting as our fourth, and if we qualify for it, nationals being our fifth. We also plan many optional social events, including a scavenger hunt, fall and spring break trips, ice skating, Just Dance, and film nights!

St. Olaf’s Office of Student Activities (OSA) has an annual budget allocated to student-led organizations. Classified as a competitive club sport, Vortex has consistently received significant levels of financial support from the school. Through matriculating “points” in Presence, our event and financials website, we are allocated a percentage of the available funds. Vortex has an exemplary history of maintaining a well-respected relationship with St. Olaf and the faculty of OSA. Vortex also holds multiple fundraisers throughout the season to help ease the financial burden that can come from being a part of such a competitive team, including cooking and delivering pancakes all over campus! Additionally, Vortex does accept donations from player’s families, however it is never expected nor required for a player’s family to donate.

Players are charged annual season dues, which are calculated based on a player’s level of attendance to the tournaments of that particular season. Dues aim to make up the money that is spent on bid fees, coaching salaries, hotel reservations, and gas and rental cars for travel.

Despite the support from St. Olaf, it is worth mentioning that frisbee is an expensive sport without complete school funding. Our current system for additional support consists of a private form where players disclose how much they can realistically cover for the year. While this does offer support, the St. Olaf Advisory Board is working to put in place a formal scholarship system through St. Olaf College and the hope is that this will alleviate some of the financial stress associated with participation in a club sport.

Vortex is a place for both players with years of frisbee under their belt as well as those who are just looking to continue their athleticism through college! We welcome prospective players to join us for a practice in the spring, and love getting to meet our future teammates. Along with Vortex, St. Olaf also has a second team, Tempest, for female and nonbinary players to join as well. Tempest still offers the great opportunity of getting to play together on a team while offering practices and tournaments with more flexible attendance requirements. Ultimately, St. Olaf Ultimate seeks to provide female and nonbinary athletes with the opportunity to play frisbee should a potential incoming player want frisbee to be a part of their college experience. Whether it’s on Vortex or Tempest, there are no cuts within the program so all incoming players will have a team to play on for their four years as an Ole!

University of California, Los Angeles

UCLA BLU is UCLA’s competitive womxn’s ultimate frisbee team. We strive to create a competitive growth environment where we can learn, grow, and support each other as a team. BLU focuses on consistently making it to Nationals by focusing on player and team development throughout the season. Each tournament we work to do better than the last, challenging ourselves during practices to get high level reps, while allowing ourselves the space to make and learn from our mistakes. UCLA also has a developmental team, Midas, which has a lower commitment in terms of practices and tournaments and focuses on player development. Our teammates across the entire program invest in each other both on and off the field becoming a close-knit community that lots of our players lean on for class recommendations, study nights, major advice, and more.

Our team has 3 mandatory practices per week, each 2 hours long. We tend to go to 3-4 tournaments per quarter, typically including Santa Barbara Invite, Pres Day Invite (in San Diego), Stanford Invite, a tournament over Spring Break (Centex/Northwest Challenge/East Coast Invite), Sectionals, Regionals, and hopefully Nationals! We expect players to throw and strength train outside of practice or work on individual skills so we can focus on learning and growing as a team during practices.

UCLA Club Sports provides free field space for practices, free use of club sports athletic trainers who are available 5 days per week, free van rentals for use during tournaments, as well as some financial assistance. (Although the team is primarily self-funded, BLU focuses on fundraising to lower financial barriers to playing.)

Smaug is first and foremost a family. Our key values are team love and grind, and we spend just as much time laughing as we do screaming disc position during our 3v3 warmup.

Smaug is a big commitment. We have mandatory practice 3x a week, including a team lift before one of the practices. We usually go to 1-2 preseason, unsanctioned tournaments in the fall, and 3-4 regular season tournaments before the series. We have a strength and conditioning coach who has established a lifting program for players to complete each week. We require two lifts outside of practice time.

We do not receive direct financial support from the school administration. However, we have access to very high quality fields (other schools are jealous), we can host tournaments to fundraise, we have access to vans for tourney transport, and we have access to club sports specific athletic trainers.

One of the best reasons to attend UCLA? It's 70+ degrees and sunny in January :)

The UMass Women's Ultimate team is a club dedicated to building friendships, competing at a high level, and promoting UMass and the sport of ultimate. We aim to encourage and inspire our teammates to become not only confident and talented players individually, but also a cohesive and supportive family. We practice during the fall and spring semesters and travel to tournaments around the Northeast and beyond.

We practice three times a week and encourage supplemental gym workouts and throwing sessions for teammates to complete on their own. For our A team we attend around three traveling tournaments going as far as South Carolina and Virginia in the spring semester in addition to the post season tournaments (sections, regionals, and hopefully nationals).

The administration has been in the process of switching hands so we are experiencing an increase in funding and respect for our sport from the school. The organization and efficiency of the administration has increased significantly and we are reaping the benefits!

Team Website: esnultimate.org

On En Sabah Nur, we value preparation, the players being the program, and being a strong support system.
We believe the confidence to perform comes from the humility to prepare, and as a team looking to compete for a national championship each year this is crucial. By the players being the program, we mean getting each player involved in some type of leadership role off the field. This ranges from ordering jerseys, social media, organizing outreach weekend, strategy, and more.

As a team dedicated to excellence, we have a fairly high level of commitment. We value hard work, and are always looking to innovate in our tactics and player development. We practice 4 days a week, generally have a tournament once or twice a month, and expect that players are training outside of practices to be able to perform their best on the field. That being said, we have an attendance policy that leaves space for people to miss practice if necessary for classes (studying for exams, projects due, etc), personal reasons, or work.

The support system we have on our team is a huge part of our success, as we're looking to support the growth of our players on and off the field. The current team is a big social and emotional support system, as well as an academic support. Players will often take classes and study together, as well as tutor younger players on the team. We also have a strong alumni support system. Outside of the financial support they provide through the alumni endowment, many are involved in coaching, come support us at tournaments, and help us network professionally.

Our school matches a certain amount of our dues which really helps keep our season cost down, as well as providing us with indoor and outdoor field space. We're also fortunate enough to be supported by an amazing network of alumni who've started an endowment for our team, meaning that we're able to provide financial assistance to any players in need. We're committed to ensuring financial burden is not a barrier for anyone to join En Sabah Nur

We would love to hear from you! We're happy to answer any questions regarding our school or team, and will absolutely show prospective students around if they're visiting campus. We also host an outreach weekend every year (usually first weekend of December) to give people a good look at what playing college ultimate is like. Follow us @esnultimate on instagram or twitter for more info or to get in touch :)

We are Contra! First and foremost we are a family and commit to being a community that people can depend on. We are socially incredibly close and spend most of our time together off the field. Among other social events, we have weekly meals together, cooked by upperclassmen, and hosted at Contra Houses (off-campus houses entirely accommodating Contras). This commitment extends to the field and we are dedicated to being the best ultimate team we can. In the last couple of years, we have consistently been in the top-5 of our region (South Central) and compete to earn a bid to nationals. In short, our primary goal is to foster the most positive and empowering environment on our team, and believe that doing so benefits us tremendously in our competitive goals.

We practice three times a week for two hours both semesters with regular mini on Saturdays added in the spring (attendance is encouraged but not required for mini). We attend two tournaments in the fall (not including our tryout tournament), and three in the spring. In the spring, we fly once or twice (Florida, California, or North Carolina), drive once or twice, and host one of our own in Saint Louis. The post-season (sections, regionals, and nationals) is generally a flying tournament to Denver, CO, or Austin, TX, and sometimes a driving one to Tulsa, OK. Outside of practice, nothing is mandatory but most of the team do between 2-3 workouts a week consisting of going to the gym, playing mini, or doing focused throwing.

We are among the best-funded ultimate frisbee clubs in the country with the only mandatory payment being for the team kit (jerseys and shorts). Even then, financial support is available. We work closely with our Student Union and Treasury to ensure this funding continues.

If you are at all interested, please reach out. Nothing makes us more happy than talking about Contra and frisbee so you'd be doing us a favor.
